HEALING FROM WOUNDS AND TRAUMA
Sometimes areas in our lives that are still unhealed can be the cause of diminished joy. Some of our issues come from thinking incorrectly, which we will talk about next. But, sometimes, we have bruises and wounds in our soul or spirit, just like those we experience in our physical body. They are unseen with the natural eye, but the evidence of their existence manifests in our responses, emotions, or behavior. Similar to a bruise on the skin that is painful to the touch, bruises on our soul cause pain when something provokes or brushes that area. If viewed correctly, pain is actually a friend, as it informs us of places that require much-needed attention. A significant level of transformation happens to us when we are born again, and many bondages and wounds are immediately healed as a result of coming to Christ.
However, experience reveals that there are some areas of our lives that are not instantly healed or resolved, and the process of discipleship brings order and change. In other instances, we need to appropriate the finished work of Jesus and receive healing in our soul and spirit. These may be the result of things done to us such as abuse, or not done such as severe neglect. There are also generational wounds or rebellion to consider, carried in the family line, manifesting in different ways in different generations, and there may also be demonic activity involved that may be empowering the issue.
The great news is that God has already made provision for our healing and restoration. At times, He will heal us in stages so that we are able to hold on to our healing, gain wisdom as to what got us there in the first place, and learn how to remain free. Inner healing is as profound and life altering as a physical healingâand making room for it in our lives is wisdom. I personally believe that it is an absolute necessity for every Christian. Wounds and trauma from our past can siphon joy from our everyday lives, and the price that Jesus paid for our complete restoration is more than enough to restore and heal us from the inside out.
There are several powerful inner healing or ministry models addressing and bringing freedom, which are listed in the resource section at the back of the book.10
PAUSING NEGATIVE THOUGHTS
Negative thinking can be focused on the past, present, or future, debilitating us from either perspective. It is not difficult to grasp that there is an abundance of negativity easily discoverable in our past, in the current cultural narrative, or that manifests as anxiety regarding what might or might not happen in our future. If we do not learn to pause the influx, it can overwhelm us and definitely shut off and restrict opportunities for joy.
Because negative self-talk is a personal landing place for other toxic mindsets, it is a fantastic starting place for us to consider. We thrive when we agree with who God says
